XENOGEN CONCEPT SUMMARY: The newly coined word xenogen combines the terms xeno- ("foreign"/"other") -- as in xenohormetic -- with "-gen" ("to produce/give birth to) -- as in pathogen -- to describe the role that certain nucleic acid baed information-carrying biomolecules found naturally within the human holobiont, such as virion particles or exosomes, have in generating the symptoms commonly referred to as diseases such as "cold" or "flu," but which, in actuality, represent a xenohormetic response that creates a set of self-regulatory/detoxifying programs (i.e. "symptoms") that result in greater resiliency in both the individual and the group, i.e. contribute to "herd immunity."
While the vector of information -- the "virus," the "particle," or the "exosome" - can be viewed as "the cause" of the set of biological programs that are induced by it, it functions as a carrier of information (like a text message), which can used by the body, if needed, instead of being penetrated and dominated by it; the agency is retained within the organisms and is not transferred to the "particle."
So-called pathogenic responses, therefore, induced by informational vectors, such as fever, diarrhea, malaise, mucus formation, etc., may function as biologically indispensable mechanisms for mediating genotype-to-immunophenotype expression, and therefore can be re-envisioned within the "xenogen hypothesis" framework to be biologically useful, if not at times life-saving. For example, lethal conditions such as cancer, or deadly opportunistic infections with certain bacteria, can be averted through the induction of episodic, seasonal "healing crises."
